Acres and Pains
S. J. Perelman
Here is Perelman’s unique testament to the joys and tribulations of country living. Acres
and Pains describes the purchase and transformation of the Perelman property,
“Rising Gorge,” as S. J. transforms himself from city slicker to country
squire. Along the way we meet realtor Dewey Naivete, a
succession of handymen, all named “Lafe” attorney Newmown Hay and a host of others.
Eudora Welty called S. J. Perelman “a National
Treasure.” The author of countless books of humor, Perelman is today universally regarded as one of America’s great humorists. He died in 1979.
